Known as the Família do Norte in Portuguese, the Northern Family is one of the newer criminal organizations operating within Brazil and was founded in 2007.
Despite this, they are claimed as the third largest criminal group in the country, with overall memberships reaching 300,000.
Similarly to the First Catarinense Group of Santa Catarina, the Northern Family holds an alliance with the Comando Vermelho and is at war with the First Capital Command. They are also allegedly in connection with elements of the FARC or other Colombian insurgent groups whom supply them with weapons, drugs and military training.
This is highly likely considering their founding location of Manaus in the northern Brazilian state of Amazonas, which simultaneously borders Peru, Colombia and Venezuela. Offering the Família do Norte easy access into cocaine and arms littered jungle enclaves.
