'Matamoros CDG' is a common term referencing the aligned crime groups operating within the city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas.
The two primary factions of this alliance appear to be Los Ciclones and Grupo Escorpion. However, it is worthy of note that the current iteration of 'Grupo Escorpion' does not appear to be made up of many of the original members whom were loyal to Antonio Cárdenas Guillén up until his death in November of 2010. Despite this, the group is still loyal to the Cárdenas clan over all.
This current iteration appears to be made up of younger criminals, many of whom are originally members of Los Ciclones and have either kept their Ciclón monikers or have temporarily adopted Escorpion claves in their time of war.
Important Escorpion estaca commanders appear to be those such as the now deceased Ciclón 89 'Comandante Droga' who headed Estaca 0, Estaca 1, and Grupo Tiburones. Another notable commander is Ciclón 60 'El Wicha', whom was previously known as Pantera 53 and heads Estaca 2. These commanders were part of a large effort to take control of Reynosa and the wider region known as Frontera Chica throughout 2018 and early 2019. The hopes being to rip them from Los Metros after repeated splintering and in-fighting left them weak to incursions. The original charge of this offensive reportedly included hundreds of vehicles, and has since resulted in dozens if not hundreds of deaths since its inception.
Violence aside, efforts also included diplomatic means to sway alliances, in which the head of the Matamoros CDG 'El Contador' had supposedly managed to strike up alliances with important factional commanders of Los Metros CDG such as Comandante Panilo, aka M-70, in his fight against El Pelochas, aka M-28.
Further to this, alliances were supposedly constructed with members of the Cártel del Noreste, who in turn assaulted cities such as Miguel Alemán in order to put pressure upon the Metros plaza boss there, El Primito, and his lieutenant Flaco Sierra. (M-300 and M-205 respectively.)
Sicarios of Gama 3 in Reynosa
Another important commander within the sphere of the Matamoros CDG and Grupo Escorpion over all is Gama 3, also known as El Negro or El Negrito. Interestingly enough, Gama 3 is brother to the late Samuel Flores Borrego, aka El Metro 3. An individual who has a kind of cult of personality following among those who once worked alongside of him.
For his part in the hostilities, Ciclón 89 was killed just before Christmas of 2018. An event which apparently rocked members of the Matamoros CDG, a display of his supposed importance in the overall structure of the organization and its fight for expansion. Many corridos and Narco Rap tracks can be found on Youtube attributed to him as a result of this importance, as he was said to be the right hand of El Contador.
There is also Señor Cortez, head of Grupo Ceros, who was supposedly responsible for allying the Matamoros faction with the Vieja Escuela Zetas and their armed wing, Los Bravos, against the Cártel del Noreste some years ago when Los Zetas split into these two factions. I believe now the VEZ is considered a faction of the Cártel del Golfo as a result, similarly to how Los Talibanes was brought into the fold during their conflict with Z-40.
Some have referred to another 'Señor Cortez' within the Matamoros CDG as well, though I believe him to be more commonly known as 'El Contador.' this is - or was, up until his arrest on March 3rd, 2019, the absolute head of the Matamoros faction and a member of the Cárdenas clan, nephew of Osiel Cárdenas Guillén in fact. He was picked up in San Luis Potosí, an area widely regarded as territory of the Cártel del Noreste. This is in line with suggestions and rumours that the Matamoros faction had allied it self with the CDN against errant factions of the Metros as part of expansionist tactics listed above.
With the untimely imprisonment of El Contador comes renewed violence within Matamoros. I do not believe a major settling of accounts has occurred within Los Ciclones and its affiliated factions since the arrest of El Orejon, aka Ciclón 7 on October 16th, 2015.
The Matamoros faction has always seemed a bit more secured - or unified in purpose than perhaps Los Metros, who are widely regarded for their bitter infighting and fractures. Unfortunately for the people of Matamoros, this seems to be shifting.
Rumour has it that the Cárdenas family it self is suffering a fracture. Supposedly, El Contador and his aligned forces headed primarily by Comandante Vaquero, aka Ciclón 46, are at war with the forces of Beto Cárdenas for control of the criminal structure.
This has given way to a tremendous amount of suffering, and further chaos among Frontera Chica as the various organizations at play begin to shuffle alliances or make moves for positions of greater power.
