Guatemala is a Central American country which is squeezed between the Mexican states of Chiapas, Campeche and Yucatan to the north, Belize to the east and Honduras & El Salvador to the southeast.
When we consider the crime rates which afflict countries like Honduras and El Salvador, and reports of Guatemala being used as a safe haven for Los Zetas, while simultaneously using it as a recruitment base for Guatemala's elite Kaibiles it becomes easy to see that the country plays an important role in Latin American organized crime.
There are several foreign crime groups operating within the country as a result of this. From the aforementioned Zetas to Barrio 18 and MS-13. We will spend our time talking about groups which originated within the country however, and will address these other organizations when talking about their own primary bases of power.
As in any case it's also important to remember that Guatemala is not coloured entirely by it's crime. The country has a rich history and is home to important Mayan and Olmec sites like Zaculeu, Takalik Abaj and Chocolá.
